Cooking is the most effective yet simple way to connect with people around you. <strong>Gary Campanella<\/strong> had the privilege to experience such deep connection firsthand. As an Italian American, Gary was used to see the people around him cooking and showing their love through delicious food. As an adult, Gary started writing a book to collect new and old recipes handed down for generations. Gary\u2019s book \u201c<em>Sempre Famiglia. How baking came to Rhode Island from Campania and Toscana, and still continues today<\/em>\u201d is more than a cookbook, it is a collection of stories and family ties with a look to the future, and we are more than happy to present it to you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a29245 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a29245\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As Gary said \u201c<em>This\u00a0<\/em><em>book has its beginnings in the 1960<\/em><em>&#8216;s in the basement of my parents&#8217; house in Rhode Island.\u00a0It was not uncommon in those days for Italian-American households to have two kitchens -the formal kitchen upstairs and the basement kitchen which was warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.\u00a0 The basement kitchen was where my mother would make <strong>sauce<\/strong>, my father would make homemade <strong>gnocchi<\/strong>, and we kids would help or get in the way<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-466ac10 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"466ac10\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-b32fcbb\" data-id=\"b32fcbb\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cffdad5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"cffdad5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Panettiere.jpg\" title=\"Panettiere\" alt=\"Panettiere\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Gary Campanella in his kitchen<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-08cebf4\" data-id=\"08cebf4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2ca27d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f2ca27d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The author stresses the importance of baking especially during the holiday season:\u00a0\u201c<em>At both Christmas and Easter -but especially at Christmas &#8211; we made a lot of sweet pastries in the basement because there was room and it didn&#8217;t interrupt the daily meal preparation upstairs.\u00a0 In the days approaching Christmas, we all worked together making the doughs, rolling out the dough, pinching pieces of dough, and making bows, balls, and wafers. Starting early in the evening and working into the night, we would make <strong>struffoli<\/strong>, <strong>ceccalini<\/strong>, <strong>pizzelle<\/strong>, prune cookies, and almond cookies in anticipation of many visitors and of Christmas day itself.\u00a0My mother had the most stamina and often continued to finish off a batch after the rest of us went to bed<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3040cfb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3040cfb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Whenever I read Gary\u2019s lines, I can feel a deep and unconditional love for his family and his Italian roots. What I appreciate the most is the desire to make these memories everlasting, and writing a book seems to me the best way to capture delightful family moments and memories. At some point in life, we may feel the urge to strengthen that connection with our authentic roots in order to find out who we are and where we are from.<\/p><p>As Gary said \u201c<em>Perhaps because I was the one who moved away (to California), <strong>I needed written recipes to keep these beloved traditions going<\/strong>.\u00a0In the early 1980&#8217;s, I started collecting <strong>handwritten recipes<\/strong> from my mother, one of my aunts, my sisters, my father, and from the Italian-American newspapers that were common at that time in Providence<\/em>\u201d.<\/p><p>Gary took his love for baking after his family members and passed this gift to his daughters: \u201c<em>I kept baking at Christmas and Easter and at other times.\u00a0I have always liked baking as a hobby<strong>.\u00a0And when my daughters came along, they started baking as soon as they could walk<\/strong>.\u00a0They and I have missed only one year of Christmas baking due to the pandemic<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>Baking represents a valuable family experience that connects the past generations with the future ones. Baking and cooking honor those who came before us creating meaningful connections with those who will come after.
