The word <em>Carnevale<\/em> comes from the latin expression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treccani.it\/vocabolario\/carnevale\/\"><em>carne-levar<\/em>e<\/a>, meaning &#8220;to remove meat&#8221; or &#8220;to say farewell to meat&#8221;. The <em>Carnevale<\/em> refers to the period of the year before Lent , which is when Catholics abstain from eating meat until the arrival of Easter. <em>Carnevale<\/em> is often celebrated in Italy with dances, masquerades and celebrations.<\/p><p><em>Carnevale<\/em> is a day that is particularly dear to Italians because it is a time to eat, dance, and spend time with friends and family before the restrictions of the Catholic Lent period begin.\u00a0 Celebrating this holiday in particular is wonderful for our students as it culminates Italian musical, culinary, artistic, and religious traditions into a single celebration.\u00a0 For Georgetown students, this event could not have come at a better time arriving just before midterm exams began.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e8c7a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1e8c7a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_1041-scaled.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_1041\" alt=\"IMG_1041\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-424d852 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"424d852\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In light of recent events in Ukraine and out of respect and solidarity towards the people of Ukraine and the greater European Union, <em>Il Circolo Italiano<\/em> chose to keep the event informative rather than celebratory.\u00a0 We distributed flyers that outlined the story of <em>Carnevale<\/em> and the customs surrounding the holiday to students of Italian.\u00a0 In Georgetown\u2019s Italian courses, <strong>many students were particularly interested in the unique tradition of <em>Carnevale<\/em> masks<\/strong>.\u00a0 Finally, we enjoyed some homemade <strong><em>Chiacchiere<\/em>, an Italian dessert that is typical of <em>Carnevale<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>&#8220;We were happy to have been able to spread awareness of such a beautiful holiday that many people know so little about. &#8221; Lent has historically been the time before Easter when many Catholics deprive themselves of something they enjoy.<\/p><p><strong>Celebrations are held all over Italy from Venice and Milan down into the villages and towns of Sicily<\/strong>. The celebration of <em>Carnevale<\/em> is the Italian version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans with oranges instead of bread.\u00a0 Many of the biggest celebrations are on <em>Marted\u00ec Grasso<\/em> aka Fat Tuesday.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-dffb8c0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dffb8c0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-703a86a\" data-id=\"703a86a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f928407 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f928407\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Chiacchiere<\/em> are crispy and fried pastries eaten over the Carnevale period. They are very crumbly sweet dessert loved by children and adults.<\/p><p>Did you know that their name changes depending on the region?\u00a0<\/p><p>You may have heard of <em>frappe<\/em> in Rome, <em>cenci<\/em> in Toscana and <em>sfrappole<\/em> Emilia.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.giallozafferano.com\/recipes\/chiacchiere-sweet-fried-dough.html\">According to the recipe<\/a>, the main ingredients are flour, sugar, eggs and butter.\u00a0<\/p><p>In today&#8217;s Italian, <em>&#8220;chiacchiere&#8221;<\/em> means &#8220;chit chat&#8221;.
