In October\u00a02022, I spent two weeks\u00a0traveling in Italy, visiting beautiful and ancient cities, eating delicious foods, and learning about the rich culture and history that has impacted the people today. My journey\u00a0began in Milan, followed by the Emilia-Romagna region on a special culinary\u00a0tour and\u00a0ended in Rome.\u00a0Beyond the delicious food\u00a0and breathtaking vistas, this trip reignited my love for travel and especially, my passion for Italian culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My Italian heritage has always held special significance for me. From recipes passed down generationally to hearing the beautiful Italian language spoken from the time of my early childhood, my family has always cherished\u00a0and celebrated its\u00a0Italian\u00a0culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

While attending Yale, I had the opportunity to study Italian with the most\u00a0passionate and enthusiastic professors\u00a0who made learning fun.\u00a0I expanded\u00a0my study of Italian by studying abroad in Siena, Italy through a Yale summer session program.\u00a0During this time,\u00a0I\u00a0expanded my knowledge of Italian and\u00a0gained\u00a0a deeper understanding of my Italian heritage. My summer abroad was formative in solidifying my deep appreciation for Italian language and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was during that summer in Siena that I was exposed to the ways in which\u00a0native Italians so fully enjoy\u00a0life\u2019s many gifts. I deeply admire the way in which Italians approach life and savor each moment. Italians prioritize leisure and enjoy the simple things. Meal preparation is an act of love and is intended to be shared. Enjoying a well-cooked meal with others, making conversation with them, and appreciating it all is an honored tradition. Food is\u00a0often locally\u00a0sourced if not truly farm to table. Italians live active lifestyles and walk everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This recent trip was particularly meaningful because we not only enjoyed delicious food, toured interesting places, and\u00a0saw awesome\u00a0sites, but we also met many locals and learned\u00a0about their culture and\u00a0family\u00a0history.\u00a0Throughout the\u00a0Emilia-Romagna\u00a0region we\u00a0had the honor of visiting an authentic producer of\u00a0Proscuitto\u00a0di Parma, the Galloni family, as well as a factory producing Parmigiano Reggiano. In Modena, we visited Acetaia Giusti, a company that has been creating high quality balsamic products since 1605. We also enjoyed viewing the making of authentic torrone candy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each of the businesses shared the story of its family\u2019s specialty\u00a0and history\u00a0<\/span>and explained its production process. These well-respected businesses share a respect for tradition and a commitment to excellence.\u00a0Additionally, having not traveled abroad in several years, it was eye opening to see the ruins of an ancient society as in Rome and be reminded that the United States is a very young country by comparison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this adventure, I reconnected with my Italian roots. By\u00a0speaking the Italian language, exploring various regions of Italy, and\u00a0discovering new sights, sounds and flavors of Italy,\u00a0I returned home with <\/span>renewed energy and zest for life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hope to incorporate the Italian ways of\u00a0enjoying\u00a0life\u2019s pleasures\u00a0by living an active lifestyle,\u00a0preserving\u00a0leisure time, thoroughly enjoying meals, and cherishing my friends and family.<\/span><\/p>\n
