Juliet has been studying Italian for 3 years and plans to continue her studies in college. She is an academically achieving student, who volunteers at the Sons and Daughters of Italy\u2019s charitable cultural events.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e4c9a3c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e4c9a3c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0e07317\" data-id=\"0e07317\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b36e598 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b36e598\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Italian Consulate in San Francisco is perched atop one of the steepest hills in the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ay, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the bustling harbor filled with visitors from all<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over the world. Although I have seen the city lights many times in my short eighteen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ears, I will never forget the moment I walked through those consulate doors to receive<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my Italian passport for the first time. As an American teenager, the moment was surreal.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ith my mom and two little brothers at my side, this opportunity was over 150 years in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the making.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me explain. See, my three-times great-grandfather was born in a tiny <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">citta <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poggioreale on the island of Sicily, twelve years before Italy officially became a nation in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1861. When his two children were young, he knew that life on the island would become<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasingly difficult. The family left the home that his ancestors had lived in for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centuries, lured by the American dream and a better life for him and his wife. For<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decades, my Italian-American relatives then passed down the stories of their courage,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tenacity, challenges, and nostalgia for the island, but they never let it get the best of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them. My passport signifies their strength, their prayers for their offspring to live and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> breathe the American dream, and their inability to never go back home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I don\u2019t take my newly recognized Italian citizenship for granted. Not even for one<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">day. Maybe it was because of the stories passed down by my great-grandparents in their<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">native Sicilian tongue. Maybe it was the notion that my great-aunts were too ashamed to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speak Italian in an unfamiliar and frightening English-speaking environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the reasons why, the nuances of the Italian language definitely don\u2019t come<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally to me. Even as an Italian citizen, I struggle to recall the subtleties of a delicate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tongue click or a romantically rolled \u201cr.\u201d From the time I started studying it, deep in the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online world of the COVID pandemic, I knew I wanted to grasp the language in a way<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that I just couldn\u2019t accomplish in the limited three years that my high school offered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing I am now confident about is my desire to learn the language so that I can<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think in Italian, dream in Italian, and eventually communicate so effectively that it will<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable me to continue my works of service, both in college and in the Italian-American<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> communities that need assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language is about more than just talking. It is about conveying emotions, appreciating<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our diversity, learning about our past, and collaborating in such a way that groups of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people can move mountains together. Our journeys through life are fluid, made up of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pieces of not only who we are, but where we came from. The old Italian law that allowed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me to receive my Italian citizenship, along with my family\u2019s grit and grind over the<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ears, was the impetus that sparked my desire to learn more about my family\u2019s culture<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and language.
