Peeps? Easter egg hunts? Fancy Easter bonnets? What?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up in Napoli and Bari, my Easters were definitely not the same as those of other American kids, even though my parents were Americans. The days leading up to Easter are filled with solemn processions and masses, testimony to Italians\u2019 deep reverence for their Catholic faith. In Italian, Easter is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasqua<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and it is a joyous celebration, marked with meaningful rituals and timeless traditions, some dating back even to the thirteenth century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the whole month before Easter, many sacred religious processions are held everywhere in Italian cities and towns, always during Holy Week, the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Settimana Santa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and on the Friday and Saturday before Easter, as well as on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus that are paraded through the town or city and displayed in the main squares. I saw these processions as a normal part of life\u2014the statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary carried through both ancient cobblestone and modern paved streets, swaying to the rhythm of their bearers. Participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes, adding to the solemnity of the occasion. One of the processions takes place in San Marco di Lamis, north of my hometown of Bari, during which dozens of people parade in costume, with horses and flaming torches to celebrate the Living Passion of Christ. The only parades were Easter parades with giant balloons and bunny-costumed marchers\u2014hardly sacred processions!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, we know there is no celebration in Italy without food, and Easter is no exception. Elaborate feasts are devoured on Easter\u2014lamb, asparagus, and other spring delicacies. When my family lived in Napoli, there was never an Easter dinner without <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">la<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pastiera napoletana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a \u201cpie\u201d made with ricotta, orange, sugar, eggs, and cooked wheat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18514 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-24x15.jpg 24w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-36x23.jpg 36w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera-48x30.jpg 48w, https:\/\/italianlanguagefoundation.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/4.-April-Easter-Pastiera.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Italian favorite saying is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014&#8221;Christmas with family, Easter with friends.\u201d Note the use of familiar plural forms, \u201ctuoi\u201d and \u201cvuoi,\u201d not the formal \u201cLei\u201d and \u201cLoro.\u201d What is fun about the Italian language (well, what isn\u2019t fun? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud83d\ude09<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is that there are so many subtle layers of meaning, depending on which pronoun form is used. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Pasquett<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a, (\u201clittle Easter\u201d), the Monday after Easter Sunday, is a public holiday almost everywhere throughout the country. Guests bring something to share at outdoor picnics. Eggs, symbolizing rebirth are featured, from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fritattas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard-boiled eggs to quiches\u2014and stories and warm laughter fill the air.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can certainly imagine my surprise upon moving to the United States to discover that Easter was such an entirely different celebration.
