Art and Architecture

Hailey Chung is a freshman in Signorina Zoino’s Italian II Honors course at Cresskill High School. She wants to pursue Italian studies throughout high school and is interested in continuing them during college. Outside of school, she likes to swim, write, and listen to true crime podcasts.

The Birth of Venus is a painting by Sandro Botticelli. Botticelli was an Italian painter who was born in 1445 in Florence. It is Venus, a deity, emerging from the sea. This painting depicts Venus immediately after she emerges from the water and is born from the sea foam. It is from the Renaissance. It is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. I love it because I love Roman mythology, and Venus is a Roman deity. Venus is the deity of love, beauty, and fertility and is the Roman version of Aphrodite.

School of Athens is by Raphael, an Italian painter. He painted this painting as a commission to decorate the Raphael Rooms in the Vatican. I saw the School of Athens last year; I was not allowed to record in the room, but the painting is truly beautiful.

It has a stunning amount of detail! I was very surprised that Raphael managed to paint it as a fresco, which is on a wall.

La amo perché amo mitologia romano, e Venere è una divinità romano. Venere è la divinità dell’amore, bellezza, e fertilità, ed è la versione romano di Afrodite. 

Scuola di Atene è da Raphael, un pittore italiano. Dipinge questo dipinto come commissione per decorare le Stanze di Raffaello in Vaticano. Ho visto Scuola di Atene l’anno scorso; non mi è stato permesso di registrare in sala, ma il dipinto è davvero splendido.

Ha una quantità incredibile di dettagli! Sono rimasto molto sorpreso dal fatto che Raffaello sia riuscito a dipingerlo come un affresco, cioè su una parete.

Coniglietti pasquali soffici? ? Caccia alle uova di Pasqua? Cappelli pasquali eleganti? Che cosa? 

Quando ero piccolina a Napoli e Bari, le mie Pasque non sono state sicuramente le stesse di quelle degli altri ragazzi americani, anche se i miei genitori erano americani. Quando ci siamo trasferiti dall’Italia negli Stati Uniti, sono rimasto scioccato dalle differenze tra le celebrazioni pasquali italiane e quelle americane. 

Ho avuto la fortuna di crescere nel Sud Italia, nelle regioni napoletana e pugliese, dove, per secoli, tradizione e fede si sono intrecciate perfettamente nella cultura. I giorni che precedono la Pasqua sono pieni di solenni processioni e messe, testimonianza della profonda venerazione degli italiani per la loro fede cattolica. In italiano, Pasqua è “Pasqua”, ed è una celebrazione gioiosa, caratterizzata da rituali significativi e tradizioni senza tempo, alcune risalenti addirittura al XIII secolo.

Per tutto il mese che precede la Pasqua, ovunque nelle città e nei paesi italiani si svolgono numerose processioni religiose sacre, sempre durante la Settimana Santa, la “Settimana Santa”, e nei venerdì e sabato prima di Pasqua, oltre che nella domenica di Pasqua. Molte chiese hanno statue speciali della Vergine Maria e di Gesù che vengono sfilate per il paese o la città ed esposte nelle piazze principali. Consideravo queste processioni come una parte normale della vita: le statue di Gesù e della Vergine Maria trasportate attraverso antiche strade acciottolate e moderne strade lastricate, ondeggiando al ritmo dei loro portatori. I partecipanti sono spesso vestiti con costumi antichi tradizionali, che aggiungono solennità all’occasione. Una delle processioni si svolge a San Marco di Lamis, a nord della mia città, Bari, durante la quale decine di persone sfilano in costume, con cavalli e torce fiammeggianti per celebrare la Passione Vivente di Cristo. Non avevo idea che niente del genere accadesse negli Stati Uniti. Quando finalmente sono arrivato qui, in quello che è il mio “paese passaporto”, ho scoperto che si svolgevano pochissime processioni della settimana di Pasqua, a meno che non fossero nelle comunità italo-americane. Le uniche sfilate erano quelle pasquali con palloncini giganti e manifestanti in costume da coniglietti: processioni difficilmente sacre!

Certo, sappiamo che in Italia non esiste festa senza cibo, e la Pasqua non fa eccezione. A Pasqua si consumano feste elaborate: agnello, asparagi e altre prelibatezze primaverili. Quando la mia famiglia viveva a Napoli, non c’era mai una cena di Pasqua senza la pastiera napoletana, una “torta” fatta con ricotta, arancia, zucchero, uova e grano cotto.

Un detto italiano preferito è “Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi” – “Natale con la famiglia, Pasqua con gli amici.” Da notare l’uso delle forme plurali familiari, “tuoi” e “vuoi”, non quelle formali “Lei” e “Loro”. Ciò che è divertente nella lingua italiana (beh, cosa non è divertente? 😉) ci sono così tanti sottili strati di significato, a seconda della forma del pronome utilizzata. La Pasquetta, (“piccola Pasqua”), il lunedì dopo la domenica di Pasqua, è un giorno festivo quasi ovunque in tutto il paese. Gli ospiti portano qualcosa da condividere durante il picnic all’aperto, che simboleggia la rinascita, dalle fritatte alle uova sode alle quiche, e storie e calde risate riempiono l’aria.

Potete certamente immaginare la mia sorpresa quando mi sono trasferito negli Stati Uniti nello scoprire che la Pasqua era una celebrazione completamente diversa. Naturalmente, mi manca non solo lo sfarzo italiano, ma anche la pervasiva venerazione nazionale per il significato più profondo della Pasqua. Buona Pasqua!

Fluffy Easter bunnies? Peeps? Easter egg hunts? Fancy Easter bonnets? What? 

Growing up in Napoli and Bari, my Easters were definitely not the same as those of other American kids, even though my parents were Americans. When we moved to the U.S. from Italy, I was shocked at the differences between Italian Easter celebrations and American celebrations. 

I was fortunate to grow up in Southern Italy, in the Neapolitan and Pugliese regions, where, for centuries, tradition and faith have been intertwined seamlessly in the culture. The days leading up to Easter are filled with solemn processions and masses, testimony to Italians’ deep reverence for their Catholic faith. In Italian, Easter is “Pasqua,” and it is a joyous celebration, marked with meaningful rituals and timeless traditions, some dating back even to the thirteenth century. 

For the whole month before Easter, many sacred religious processions are held everywhere in Italian cities and towns, always during Holy Week, the “Settimana Santa,” and on the Friday and Saturday before Easter, as well as on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus that are paraded through the town or city and displayed in the main squares. I saw these processions as a normal part of life—the statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary carried through both ancient cobblestone and modern paved streets, swaying to the rhythm of their bearers. Participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes, adding to the solemnity of the occasion. One of the processions takes place in San Marco di Lamis, north of my hometown of Bari, during which dozens of people parade in costume, with horses and flaming torches to celebrate the Living Passion of Christ. To give you an idea of the solemnity and deep reverence of these processions, click here to view a video of that procession.

I had no idea that nothing like this happened in the U.S. When I finally came here to what is my “passport country,” I discovered that very few Easter week processions took place, unless they were in Italian-American communities. The only parades were Easter parades with giant balloons and bunny-costumed marchers—hardly sacred processions!

Of course, we know there is no celebration in Italy without food, and Easter is no exception. Elaborate feasts are devoured on Easter—lamb, asparagus, and other spring delicacies. When my family lived in Napoli, there was never an Easter dinner without la pastiera napoletana—a “pie” made with ricotta, orange, sugar, eggs, and cooked wheat. 

An Italian favorite saying is “Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi”—”Christmas with family, Easter with friends.” Note the use of familiar plural forms, “tuoi” and “vuoi,” not the formal “Lei” and “Loro.” What is fun about the Italian language (well, what isn’t fun? 😉) is that there are so many subtle layers of meaning, depending on which pronoun form is used. La Pasquetta, (“little Easter”), the Monday after Easter Sunday, is a public holiday almost everywhere throughout the country. Guests bring something to share at outdoor picnics. Eggs, symbolizing rebirth are featured, from fritattas to hard-boiled eggs to quiches—and stories and warm laughter fill the air.

You can certainly imagine my surprise upon moving to the United States to discover that Easter was such an entirely different celebration. Of course, I do miss not only the Italian pageantry but also the pervasive, national reverence for the deeper meaning of Easter. Buona Pasqua!

COMPARING AMERICAN DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE, FURNITURE, INTERIOR DESIGN WITH THAT OF THE ITALIANS.

In my life, I have always been fascinated by Italian architecture and design. I believe Italy has more colors and style in its objects and monuments compared to America. For example, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice because has a long history that we can hardly imagine. 

In particular, Venice is famous for a type of glass where artisans work with a flame to shape it into a variety of forms and dimension, this is called Murano glass. Murano is one of the 118 islands of Venice, specialized in glassmaking. It is rare and expensive, I used to have a Murano glass object at home, but I broke it on my head when I was 10 years old…. for no reason. 

American design, on the other hand, inspires me with its references to the Far west and old TV series, featuring antique yet elegant furniture. Some examples that come to mind are Friends, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother. 

The first time I studied Greek sculptures, my mind was illuminated by the simplicity and forms of the figures representing gods like Zeus, Poseidone, Athena, Apollo and others.

I believe the art in the world, allows people to imagine what our ancestors saw in their daily lives represented through simple sculptures.

Nella mia vita sono sempre stato affascinato dall’architettura e dal design italiano. Credo che l’Italia ha più colori e stile nei suoi oggetti e monumenti rispetto all’America. Per esempio, la Basilica di San Marco a Venezia perché ha una lunga storia che difficilmente possiamo immaginare.

In particolare, Venezia è famosa per un tipo di vetro in cui gli artigiani lavorano con una fiamma, in una varietà di forme e dimensioni, questo è chiamato vetro di Murano. Murano, è una delle 118 isole di Venezia, specializzata nella lavorazione del vetro. È raro e costoso, ho usato per avere un oggetto di vetro di Murano a casa, ma l’ho rotto sulla mia testa quando avevo 10 anni… senza motivo.

Il design americano, invece mi ispira con i suoi riferimenti al far West e vecchie serie TV, con mobili antichi ma eleganti. Alcuni esempi che mi vengono in mente sono: Friends, the Big bang theory, How I Met Your Mother.

La prima volta che ho studiato le sculture greche, la mia mente è stata illuminata dalla semplicità e forme delle figure che rappresentano dei come Zeus, Poseidone, Atena, Apollo e altri.

Credo che l’arte nel mondo, permette alle persone di immaginare ciò che i nostri antenati hanno visto nella loro vita quotidiana rappresentata attraverso semplici sculture.

Comparing American design in architecture, furniture, interior design with that of the Italians. Who are the Italian designers whom you admire?

Earth, one of the most significant part of our existence, has made a really amazing evolution during billions of years. However, the thing that may be more incredible than that is how humanity adapted to these changes.

Looking back, humanity has made a truly impressive development into our living conditions during these years. From my point of view we should be really thankful to people who took part in this development such as architects, designers, and others, because of them we are living in astonishing countries, cities, houses, and so on.Comparing American and Italian design in architecture, furniture, and interior may be tricky for me, as I am not really know with them, but from my perspective the American houses are more associated with 2-floor building with a big enough garden, and big metropolitan cities with a lot of unbelievable sky sketchers, while Italy has a lot of little minimalistic houses, sometimes near or on the water, tiny streets and a lot of historical buildings.

Finally I would like to say that American and Italian architecture is really different but we should also take in the consideration that Italy is an older country meanwhile America is known as younger one.

La Terra, una delle parti più significative della nostra esistenza, ha fatto una vera e propria evoluzione straordinaria durante miliardi di anni. Tuttavia, ciò che potrebbe essere ancora più incredibile di questo è come l’umanità si sia adattata a questi cambiamenti.
Guardando indietro, l’umanità ha fatto uno sviluppo davvero impressionante nelle nostre condizioni di vita nel corso di questi anni. Dal mio punto di vista, dovremmo essere davvero grati a tutte le persone che hanno partecipato a questo sviluppo, come architetti, designer e altri, perché grazie a loro viviamo in paesi, città, case straordinarie, e così via. Confrontare il design americano e italiano nell’architettura, nei mobili e negli interni potrebbe essere difficile per me, poiché non sono molto esperto in materia, ma dal mio punto di vista le case americane sono più associate a edifici a due piani con un giardino abbastanza grande, e a grandi città metropolitane con molti incredibili grattacieli, mentre l’Italia ha molte piccole case minimaliste, a volte vicino o sull’acqua, piccole strade e molti edifici storici.
Infine, vorrei dire che l’architettura americana e quella italiana sono davvero diverse, ma dovremmo anche prendere in considerazione il fatto che l’Italia è un paese più antico, mentre l’America è conosciuta come un paese più giovane.

The italian architecture is a unique art, it was born from Andrea Palladio (30 november – Maser 19 august 1580)from the republic of venice, the father of architecture, it expanded in all Europe giving life at others type: Roman Architecture, Romantic Architecture, Gotic Architecture etc…

Some italian architecture:

  • Colosseum (Rome)
  • Pantheon (Rome)
  • Basilica of the Forum of Pompeii (Pompeii)

Italian furniture and design is known for its elegance and functionality. Over the centuries it has improved by combining craftsmanship and quality of materials with attention to detail, aesthetics and practicality.

American architecture is recent, it was born from Native Americans. American buildings are mainly skyscrapers having an eclectic characteristic. It was always born from Andrea Palladio.

Some architectures were present before American architecture, others were born after:

  • Architecture of the Young Nation (New York)
  • Colonial Architecture (New England)
  • Native American Architecture

American furniture and design is characterized because it has many cultural influences and diversity which has evolved reflecting the diversity evolving in aesthetics.

Italian and American architecture differ in history and features that make their architecture unique such as:

  • the statue of liberty
  • and the tower of pisa.

Comparison between American and Italian design in architecture

American design, while diverse, often emphasizes pragmatism and scale, manifesting in expansive architecture and functional furniture. In contrast, Italian design, steeped in centuries of artistic tradition, prioritizes elegance, craftsmanship, and a seamless integration of aesthetics and functionality. This distinction is evident in architecture, where American skyscrapers often reflect corporate might, while Italian structures, even modern ones, retain a human scale and a connection to historical context. Similarly, American interiors might favor open-plan layouts and mass-produced furniture, whereas Italian interiors showcase bespoke pieces, luxurious materials, and a keen eye for detail. The difference extends to the use of materials. American design, while embracing innovation, sometimes prioritizes cost-effectiveness. Italian design, however, often elevates materials to an art form, showcasing the inherent beauty of marble, wood, and glass. Among Italian designers, Renzo Piano stands out. His mastery of glass, as seen in projects like The Shard in London and the California Academy of Sciences, demonstrates a profound understanding of light and space. Piano’s ability to create buildings that are both technologically advanced and aesthetically captivating reflects the enduring spirit of Italian design—a harmonious blend of innovation and timeless beauty. His work exemplifies how modern architecture can maintain a delicate balance between transparency and structural integrity, allowing natural light to become a defining element of the built environment.

 

Fun fact about me:

Japan is my favorite country and I really want to visit it, not only for its beauty but also for its architecture. Personally, I also find its story very beautiful. Still talking about Japan, I like so much watching anime and my favorite food is sushi. Since I was a child, I learned fastly how to use chopsticks.

Il Giappone è il mio paese preferito e desidero tanto visitarlo, non solo per la sua bellezza, ma anche per la sua architettura. Personalmente, trovo molto bella anche la sua storia. Sempre parlando del Giappone, mi piace tantissimo guardare gli anime e il mio cibo preferito è il sushi. Da quando ero bambino, ho imparato rapidamente a usare le bacchette.
